The Ottawa-Lyon “Mirror Chair”
The Ottawa-Lyon Mirror Chair “Individual avatars and contemporary liability issues under private law” is an original exclusive and innovative research centre that, from a comparative perspective, marks the dynamism, the richness and the exceptional influence of private law at the University of Ottawa’s Civil Law Section and at Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University’s Faculty of Law.

Purpose of the Chair
This three-year collaborative and transnational research project will examine the new issues and challenges that artificial intelligence imposes on private law. Through its cross-disciplinary approach to private law, and in keeping with an interdisciplinary perspective, the activities of the Mirror Chair will focus on two research streams that promote both basic research as well as applied research and partnerships. These streams, which are juxtaposed with current and future technological and normative challenges, will focus on the legal status and civil liability of a non-human entity.It will provide a fertile environment for reflecting on the similarities and differences between Quebec and French law, allowing the Chair holders to organise scientific events on both sides of the Atlantic, to disseminate research throughout Canada and France in peer-reviewed publications and, in the medium term, to submit applications for major Canadian and European partnership grants.
The project will also aim to develop state-of-the-art research training for students. It is a genuine incubator that will undoubtedly consolidate the strengths in private and comparative law of two internationally renowned institutions, Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University and the University of Ottawa.
